Silent letters



There are number of letters in English language those are silent and we are not aware of them. it is a main reason why we make mistakes in English pronunciation. So, today we are going to learn some words those have silent letters.

  • A

If a word end with ICALLY then A will be silent.

Example: 
  • Basically
  • Logically
  • Musically
  • Romantically
Note: That rule doesn't apply to all words that end with ALLY.

Example: 
  • Ideally
  • Generally
  • Vocally
So, this rule just applies to words that ends with ICALLY


  • B
The letter B will be silent if a word ends with MB.
Example: 
  • Bomb
  • Climb
  • Comb
  • Crumb
  • Dumb
  • Lamb
  • Limb
  • Numb
  • Succumb
  • Thumb
  • Tomb
  • Womb
All of these words end in the sound mmm.

When MB is in the middle of word, most of the time MB will be pronounce.
Example:
  • Ambiguous
  • Member
  • Number
  • Umbrella
  • Symbol
The letter B will be silent if it before T. 
Example: 
  • Debt
  • Subtle
  • Doubt

  • C

C is silent if it comes after an S and before an E or an I.
Example: 
  • Descent
  • Fascinate
  • Fluorescent
  • Scene
  • Scent

  • D
D silent before the letter G.
Example: 
  • Badge
  • Budget
  • Fridge
  • Bridge
  • Edge
  • Judge
  • Knowledge
Common random words where D is silent
Example:

  • E
If E is at the end of a word we don't pronounce it.
Example:

  • G
If  a word begins with GN , G will be silent
Example:
  • Gnat

  • Gnome
If  a word ends with GN , G will be silent
Example:
  • Campaign
  • Design
  • Foreign
  • Reign
  • Sign
If GN is in the middle of a word most of the time we pronounce the G.
Example:
  • Ignore
  • Magnificent
  • Signature
G is usually silent after a vowel sound
Example:
  • Daughter
  • Night
  • Thought
  • Through
  • Weigh

  • H
If a word begins with GH.
Example:
  • Gherkin
  • Ghetto
  • Ghost
If a word begins with RH.
Example:
  • Rhinoceros
  • Rhythm
  • Rheumatic
  • Rhinoplasty
Sometimes after AC.
Example:
  • Mechanic
  • School
  • Technology
A few words start with a silent H.
Example:
  • Heir
  • Honest
  • Honour
  • Hour
In British English H is not silent in Herb and Herbal.
In American English H is silent in Herb and Herbal.
