Intensifiers


Intensifiers like so, really, very etc.
These words can be overused quite easily.

So, today we are going to learn some more advanced and interesting intensifiers.

Intensifiers: Makes the adjective more intense or dramatic, gives it more emphasis.

Common but interesting Intensifiers

  • Instead of very big.
    • you can say Enormous
Example: Your house is enormous.
  • Instead of very small.
    • you can say Tiny.
Example: My apartment is tiny.
  • Instead of very smart.
    • you can say Brilliant.
Example: you are brilliant
  • Instead of very bad 
    • you can say awful/Dreadful/ horrible.
Example: This movie is awful.
  • Instead of very sure
    • you can say certain
Example: I'm certain a left my keys on table
  • Instead of very good/nice
    • you can say Awesome/Excellent /Amazing
Example: This book is excellent
  • Instead of very tasty
    • you can say delicious
Example: This food is delicious.


Certain intensifiers are often paired with certain adjectives. this is called collocation. Collocation is a words that are commonly seen/heard together.

  1. Absolutely
  2. Awfully(Awful is similar to horrible or bad, but Awfully also mean: very)
  3. Completely
  4. Exceptionally
  5. Particularly
  6. Quite
  7. Totally
  8. Dangerously
  9. Highly

You will sound better when you use these common collocations. 
Some examples of collocations:
  • Your house is absolutely enormous.
  • My apartment is awfully tiny.
  • You are totally brilliant.
  • You are highly intelligent.
  • This movie is completely awful.
  • This movie is completely horrible.
  • I'm quite certain i left my keys on the table.
  • This book is particularly excellent.
  • This book is particularly interesting.
  • This dessert is dangerously delicious.
